Camp Directors: Stephen and Marie Sweezey

Stephen and Marie Sweezey joined Birchwood Camp in May 2009 when Stephen was hired as the Camp Manager. During the summer Stephen worked as Manager as well as Supervisor for the Challenge Course and Waterfront activities. Marie also served at Birchwood during summer 2009 as Resource Coordinator and Assistant Cook. In October 2009 the couple was hired full time at Birchwood; Marie serves as the Camp Director and Stephen serves as the Program Director/ Camp Manager.

Stephen was born and raised in Rome, Georgia. He received his Bachelors Degree in Sports and Fitness from Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Georgia. He holds his Masters in Sports and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Stephen loves all things outdoors and is especially enthusiastic about mountaineering, skiing, and ultra-running.

Marie is originally from Glorieta, New Mexico (near Santa Fe). She grew up going to camp every chance she got! She received a Bachelor’s degree in Religion from McMurry University in Abilene, TX. She enjoys hiking, skiing, reading, old movies, and being with kids & youth.

Stephen and Marie met while working at a summer camp in New Mexico, so camping is literally in their roots! They were married in August 2008 in Santa Fe, New Mexico and lived there for several months before moving to Alaska. The couple fell in love with Birchwood Camp during their first visit to Alaska in 2009 and they appreciate the unique community building experience that comes from being at camp. They feel very blessed to get to be part of this fantastic ministry each and every day.
